  1. Hiding behind a dust cloud

of wars, bank swindles, and a global economic crisis
    our governments are conspiring
to turn the internet inside out.

A global treaty is being drafted
    behind closed doors
and beyond the reach of any democratic process
and it could squash many of the freedoms
we take for granted in our networked culture.

Copyright infringement is being used as a convenient excuse to cripple the web. Ultimately the goal is to allow the big telcos to bypass our legal system entirely by inserting regulation into the network itself. The code or the network becomes the law. And whoever controls the shape of the network controls the shape of our culture.

None of this is news. We’ve been talking about it for a long time. But there’s a real urgency now to all of this. And what is at stake is not our ability to share files or steal music,
but the shape of the internet and by extension the shape of our society.
